QR code dog tags: how they work, pros and limits

What exactly is a tag with a QR code? What happens when someone scans it, what it does (and doesn't do), and how to choose the right one in Tunisia.

QR code dog tags: how they work, pros and limits

The QR code tag has become the modern alternative to the engraved tag. But how does it really work, and what can it do for your dog? Here's a simple explanation, without the jargon.

The principle

A QR code is simply a web address encoded in an image. Engraved on the tag, it points to your dog's profile page. When someone scans it with their phone camera — iPhone or Android, with nothing to install — that page opens.

What happens when someone scans a Homy tag

  1. The person sees your dog's name and photo, plus the information you've added to their description: temperament, allergies, medication, instructions ("he's scared of men, speak softly").
  2. They can alert you in one tap: you receive an email with their number, their message and their location, if they agree to share it. Your own number stays hidden.
  3. If you've reported your dog lost in your account, the page clearly shows that they're being searched for, your numbers are displayed so they can call you, or send you a pre-filled SMS or email with a link to their location, and you receive an email with the location of the scan.

You stay in control: your contact details are only displayed when you report your dog lost, you choose which ones (name, phone, email), and you can add several numbers (yours, a relative's, your vet's).

Its advantages

  • Readable by anyone, anywhere, with a simple phone.
  • Always up to date: changed your number? You update the profile, and the tag stays the same.
  • More information than an engraving: several contacts, health, instructions.
  • Reassuring for the finder: they see a photo and know they have the right dog.

Its limits (let's be honest)

  • It's not a GPS. The tag doesn't track your dog continuously: someone has to find them and scan it. To understand the difference, read GPS collars: what manufacturers don't tell you.
  • It doesn't replace the microchip for official identification and travel.
  • It depends on an online service. Choose a reliable service with no mandatory subscription, so the page stays active for your dog's whole life.
  • The QR code has to stay readable: go for an engraving that stands up to water, sand and rubbing.

How to choose the right QR tag

  • No subscription, or a clear one-off cost.
  • No app for the finder to install.
  • Contact details you can change at any time, and a choice over what's displayed.
  • Tough and waterproof: sea, pool, rain, rolling in the sand.
  • Light and quiet, suited to your dog's size.
  • A local service: support in French and Arabic, delivery and payment suited to Tunisia.

That's exactly why we created Homy: a waterproof QR tag, engraved to last, with no subscription, and cash on delivery anywhere in Tunisia.
