Dog breeds that run away the most: which ones escape (and how to keep them safe)
Huskies, beagles, Malinois, hunting dogs… some breeds have escaping in their blood. Why, and what precautions to take in Tunisia depending on your dog's profile.

Any dog can run away. But some breeds were selected over centuries to run long distances, follow a scent trail or work independently — and those instincts don't disappear in a flat in Tunis or a villa in Hammamet. Knowing your dog's profile helps you stay one step ahead.
Nordic dogs: husky, malamute
They were bred to pull sleds over long distances. The result: a huge need to run, strong independence and recall that is often unreliable.
In Tunisia, be careful: huskies cope badly with the heat. Their escapes often happen in the evening or early morning, when it's cooler and they feel full of energy. A bored husky can dig under a wall or jump higher than you'd imagine.
Plan for: a high fence buried into the ground, long outings at the cooler times of day, and never off the leash near a road.
Scent hounds: beagle, basset hound, pack hounds
Their nose is in charge. One interesting trail and they forget their name, the street, and you.
Plan for: a long line on walks, sniffing games at home to satisfy the instinct, and recall training from a very early age.
Sighthounds and speed dogs: sloughi, galgo, whippet
The sloughi, a North African sighthound, is found in Tunisia. These dogs take off in an instant at any movement (a cat, a hare) and reach speeds no human can match.
Plan for: a leash in unfenced areas, a harness suited to their slim neck, and enclosed grounds for running.
High-energy working dogs: Malinois, German Shepherd, Border Collie
Very popular in Tunisia, especially the Malinois. Intelligent and tireless, they run away when they're bored or when they have a "job" to do (following something, guarding a bigger territory).
Important: these are also breeds that are sought after and stolen. A Malinois wandering alone attracts the wrong kind of attention — see our guide on dog theft in Tunisia.
Plan for: real daily activity (training, games, sport), a secure garden, and no dog left alone outside in front of the house.
Terriers: Jack Russell, Fox Terrier
Small but determined, they dig, squeeze through gaps and chase anything that moves. A 15 cm gap under a gate is all they need.
Plan for: checking the bottom of fences, gates and any gaps.
Unneutered males, of every breed
It's not a breed, but it's a major factor: an intact male can travel kilometres for a female in heat. Talk to your vet about it.
What about the dogs that run away the least?
Dogs that are very attached to their owner and not especially driven to hunt (Cavalier King Charles, bulldog, pug, Shih Tzu…) are less likely to run away out of instinct. But they run away out of fear like any other dog, during a thunderstorm or a night of firecrackers. And a small dog lost in the street is very vulnerable.
Precautions for every breed
- Know their weak spot: scent, speed, boredom, fear, hormones.
- Adapt the fence to their technique: jumping, digging, squeezing through.
- Work on recall from a very young age.
- Identification anyone can read: a Homy QR tag on the collar lets anyone who finds your dog see their profile and alert you in one tap, no app needed.
